Thomas Carr

Thomas Carr is entering his first season with the ETSU men’s basketball program, having joined the Buccaneers as an assistant coach in June of 2013.

Prior to coming to Johnson City, Carr was a standout guard at Pfeiffer University and earned his sports management degree in 2008. He later coached as an assistant at Chipola College (2009-10) and Hargrave Military Academy (2010-11), before spending the 2012-13 season as head coach at George Washington High School in Danville, Va.

Known for his skills in player development as well as his recruiting ties, ETSU head coach Murry Bartow said Carr is a rising star in the college coaching ranks.

“Thomas has great people skills and is a really good communicator,” Bartow said. “His players love him, and I was really impressed when I watched his teams play and saw his interaction with his players. He is extremely well connected from a recruiting standpoint, and we believe he can certainly make our program better.”

Carr said he believes his coaching philosophy can help the Bucs.

“Everything I believe in based on pushing guys to play as hard as they can for as long as they can,” Carr said. “If guys commit to playing hard, playing smart, and playing together, the scoreboard will take care of itself.”

Following his graduation from St. John’s Jesuit High School in Toledo, Ohio, in 2003, Carr went on to play a year of prep basketball at Hargrave Military Academy. While there, his team was the top ranked prep squad in the nation, finishing the season as the 2003-04 Prep School National Champions.

Teaming up with Canarsie Blue Devil founder Clyde Chapman, Carr went on to play collegiately at Pfeiffer University, serving as a captain his senior year and finishing second in the nation for 3-point field goals made.

Carr went on to begin his coaching career at Chipola, working for current Samford assistant coach Jake Hendrick, where he served as the program’s recruiting coordinator, academic advisor, and strength/conditioning coach. After a year at Chipola, he returned to Hargrave and held many of the same coaching responsibilities.

While at Hargrave, he worked for current Louisville assistant coach Kevin Keatts, helping eight players sign Division I scholarships, with current North Carolina Tar Heel P.J. Hairston being named to the McDonald's All-American Team. The team finished the season as the No. 1 ranked prep school in the country.

After a successful stint at Hargrave, Carr moved on to his first head coaching job at George Washington High School and led his team to a 25-3 overall record, winning multiple championships throughout the year. The team finished ranked No. 15 in the state, led the state of Virginia in points per game (88 ppg), and Carr was named the Western Valley District Coach of the Year for the 2012-13 season.

Carr is a Toledo, Ohio native that credits his parents, Bill and Renuka Carr and Maureen and Tim Martindale, as well as former coaches Ed Heintschel, Kevin Keatts and Dave Davis, for helping him get to where he is today.
