Derek Niesman enters his second season on the ETSU coaching staff, overseeing hitting and fielding duties for the Bucs.
In his first season as a graduate assistant coach (2013), Niesman helped the Bucs' to their first 20-win campaign since 2010. The team saw drastic offensive improvements, upping its runs output by nearly 50 percent from 2012. ETSU also posted improved marks in several other categories, including slugging percentage, on-base percentage, walks, and fielding percentage.
Niesman joined the ETSU staff after enjoying a stellar four-year playing career with ETSU Baseball (2010-13), in which he made 195 career appearances, including 188 starts.
During his four seasons, he maintained a career .271 batting average, compiling 176 hits, 91 RBI, and 21 doubles. In 2013, Niesman helped ETSU to the Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1981. He was also named to the A-Sun All-Tournament Team.
A native of Wellington, Fla., Niesman received Atlantic Sun All-Academic honors in 2010 and 2011. He graduated in 2013 with a Bachelors degree in Sports and Liesure Management.
