Longtime international coach Bill McCammon joined the ETSU men's basketball staff prior to the 2014-15 season.

McCammon, who played for Bartow’s father Gene and graduated from UAB in 1981, spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach at the college level before beginning a 23-year run on the international circuit where he served as a head coach for professional teams in countries such as Puerto Rico, Cyprus, Mexico, Spain, Venezuela, Eritrea, Indonesia, Nepal and the Dominican Republic.

“I’m really excited to have Bill on our staff and I think he brings a lot to our program,” Bartow said. “He played for my Dad and is obviously someone I’ve known for a long time, so our friendship had a lot to do with this move. Bill has had an incredible experience coaching internationally, so we believe this can really help us develop our players, and from a recruiting standpoint, he gives us a unique avenue with the international contacts he’s developed over the last 20 plus years.”

McCammon said he was glad to be back at work in the continental United States.

“I thought it was time to come back home and end my great adventure abroad,” said McCammon, whose college coaching experience included an eight-year stint as an assistant coach under head coach Lee Hunt at institutions such as Ole Miss from 1982 to 1985 and the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 1986 to 1990. “Having this opportunity to come back and coach with Murry is special. His family has meant so much to me and my career, and to have been his teammate back at UAB, it’s a unique experience to be together on the bench again.”

Having built strong ties throughout the International Basketball Federation – better known as FIBA – McCammon brings a unique set of experiences and connections to the ETSU program. Both as an international lecturer, clinician and a coach, McCammon’s resume includes not only coaching professionals on the international stage, but also developing national teams for countries such as Indonesia and Eritrea.

McCammon and his Cypriot wife Pola have a daughter Anastasia, who is a junior at the University of California-Santa Barbara, and a son Odysseas, who is finishing high school on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus this year.

McCammon joins a staff that includes another first-year assistant in Jason Slay, while both Bob Bolen and Mark Richmond are entering their second year with the program.
