Skyler Barnett joined the ETSU coaching staff August 15, 2017 as a volunteer assistant and enters his second season working with the catchers, among other duties.

Barnett is no stranger to Johnson City, as he enjoyed a successful playing career at ETSU from 2008-12. Barnett spent the last three seasons at Carson-Newman University as the recruiting coordinator.

“I’m honored and humbled to be back home to work with these guys and be back at ETSU,” Barnett said.

In his first season since returning to his roots, Barnett worked closely with Jackson Greer. Greer had an outstanding defensive year as a sophomore in 2018, finishing with a .994 fielding percentage in 41 games with 38 starts. More impressively, Greer threw out nearly half the runners who tried to steal on him, finishing with a low .574 stolen base attempted percentage after gunning down 20 of 47 baserunners.

Barnett was the ETSU team-captain in 2012 and was also a defensive mastermind behind the plate. He received All-Academic honors from the ASUN Conference in his final three seasons as well as being a recipient of the commissioner's medal for academic achievement. His best season was his sophomore year, where he batted .296 with five RBI and a .486 on-base percentage.

“It’s exciting to have an ETSU alum as a part of our coaching staff,” Pennucci said. “Coach Barnett has worked under Coach Tom Griffin at Carson Newman, who is an outstanding baseball man and is highly respected in our game. Skyler is a high energy guy that has great attention to detail and is a hard worker.”

In between his playing career and working for Carson-Newman, Barnett coached as a graduate assistant at Lincoln Memorial, helping the school win the South Atlantic Conference for the first time in 54 years. He then joined the staff at Austin Peay State University in 2014 where he coached the catchers and served as a first base coach for one season.

Barnett owns a bachelor's degree in Sport Management from ETSU, which he received in 2012.
