Johnson City, Tenn. - ETSU sophomore Reid Casey pitched a complete-game seven hitter to lead the Bucs in a 5-2 win over VMI at ETSU's Cardinal Park.
Casey (3-4) allowed just two runs and struck out 10 batters. The Buccaneer offense was led by Jeremy Terry who went 2-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Raymond McBride went 3-3 with one run scored.
After two scoreless innings, ETSU (10-19, 7-9 Southern Conference) took a 1-0 lead in the third. Terry led off the inning with an infield hit and advanced to second on an errant throw by VMI third baseman Stephen Johnson. Terry moved to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny Pugh.
The Keydets (14-20, 7-15) knotted the score at 1-1 with a run-scoring double by Chris Catanzaro in the fifth. Catanzaro's rip off the right-field wall plated Ed Pearson who singled earlier in the frame. The Bucs' struck back with a home run to right field by lead-off hitter Terry in the home half of the inning.
VMI tied the game 2-2 in the sixth. Johnson earned a lead-off walk and scored on Eric East's double.
ETSU regained the lead with two in the bottom of the sixth. The Bucs had runners on first and third after a Chad Boruff single and a Raymond McBride double. Ryan McKinney hit a shot up the middle that was snagged by a drawn-in shortstop, allowing Boruff to score. McBride stole home when McKinney was caught in a run-down off first.
The Bucs loaded the bases in the eighth with no outs and scored one run to finish off the scoring at 5-2. McKinney notched his second RBI of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Boruff.
ETSU and VMI will conclude their three-game set with a doubleheader tomorrow (April 9) beginning at 11 a.m.
