Davidson, N.C. - Sophomore Tim Frend lined a 1-2 fastball over the leftfield fence to lead off the bottom of the 10th for Davidson (19-15, 11-9 in SoCon) to lift the host Wildcats to a doubleheader split with East Tennessee State (8-18, 5-9), winning the second game, 5-4. The Bucs hammered the Wildcats in the opener, 17-3.
East Tennessee State pecked away at Davidson early in the opener, then exploded late in the blowout in setting season highs with 17 runs and 19 hits. Chad Boruff, just a freshman, had a memorable game by drilling three long home runs to double his season total to six, and drove in six runs.
Danny Pugh led the Bucs with four hits in six trips to the plate, including a double and a three-run homer. Also with four hits was Jeremy Terry, all of which were singles. Chuck Dewald blasted the fifth of five homers off six Wildcat pitchers to finish the scoring.
Meanwhile, Buc hurler Reid Casey (2-4) was impressive in going the distance. He gave up just three runs, two earned, on six hits and five walks while striking out five.
Junior Ryan Stroker (4-3) was stuck with the loss, surrendering 12 hits and nine runs, six earned, in 5.1 innings of work. He walked three and struck out four. The first five hits off Stroker did not get out of the infield.
The Bucs built a 4-0 lead on a two-run double by Nathan Copeland in the second game, then two-out RBI safeties by Ed Sparks and Boruff in the fifth.
In the fifth, Davidson sophomore Jack Purcell broke up Shannon Carter's no-hitter and shutout with a two-out RBI single. Davidson pulled within a run in the sixth on a two-bun blast by sophomore James Marino, then tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Purcell.
Carter pitched seven-plus innings for ETSU, allowing just four hits and three walks which led to four runs while striking out eight batters. Freshman Jackson Simerly (0-2) suffered the loss by giving up Frend's line drive homer, his eighth of the season.
