(Apr. 19, 2004) - East Tennessee State sophomore first baseman Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.) was named Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week Monday afternoon after leading the Bucs to a sweep this past weekend over SoCon rival Appalachian State. In the three-game series, Church batted .778 (7-for-9) with four doubles, four walks two RBIs and eight runs scored. In Saturday's game one against the Mountaineers, Church went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a walk and three runs scored. He followed that up by going 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. In the series finale Sunday afternoon, Blake was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Blake has had at least one hit and scored at least one run in each of ETSU's last five games. He is batting .632 (12-of-19), scoring 10 runs in that span. Church has raised his batting average to .361, second on the team. He leads the Bucs with 32 RBIs and also has three homers while scoring 21 runs on the season. The Buccaneers are one of the hottest teams in the Southern Conference, having won six-straight games and seven-straight conference games. East Tennessee State's next game is against UNC Asheville Wednesday night at 7 p.m. from Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn.
