GREENVILLE, S.C. (Mar. 13, 2005) - The Furman Paladins defeated East Tennessee State, 7-4, in Southern Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon from Furman Stadium in Greenville, S.C. With the win, Furman raises its record to 7-8, 3-3 in SoCon games while ETSU falls to 11-2, 2-1 in conference action.
The Bucs had runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the first as Nick Crowe (Johnson City, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch and Shane Byrne (Spartanburg, S.C.) singled to left. But Furman first baseman Matthew Betsill snared a Caleb Moore (
Furman then took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Nick Wajda and Andrew Greene led off the inning with back to back walks. Wajda advanced to third on a double play and would score as Betsill beat out a slow roller for an infield single.
The Bucs scored a run to tie the game in the top of the fourth. With two outs in the inning,
The Paladins regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. With one out in the inning, A.J. Davidiuk singled to right, then moved to third on a single to right-center by Betsill. Case Cassedy drove in Davidiuk with a single into right field.
ETSU manufactured a run to tie the game in top of the fifth. Junior centerfielder Matt Traylor (
Furman took a 4-2 lead with two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Joey Rodgers and Wajda hit back-to-back singles and Greene walked to load the bases. Davidiuk came to the plate and hit a two-run single down the left field line.
Furman's lead was cut in half as the Bucs scored a run in the top of the sixth. Crowe led off the inning with an infield single then advanced to second on a walk by Byrne. Crowe moved to third on a double-play grounder and crossed the plate on an infield single by sophomore left fielder Stephen Douglas (
The Paladins added a run to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Daysh singled up the middle with one out and moved to second on a ground out by Sam McLain. Tony Maccani then hit a RBI single through the left side to score Daysh from second.
Furman ran their lead to 7-3 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Wajda led off the inning with a walk, then advanced on a sac bunt by Greene. Davidiuk and Betsill followed with back-to-back singles to left, the latter scoring Wajda from third. Cassedy then hit an RBI groundout to first, scoring Davidiuk.
But that was as close as the Bucs would get as Furman closer David Mitchell was able to avoid any further damage in the final two innings.
Furman lefty Ryan Hodinka earned the win (2-1) in his first start of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. Buccaneer junior lefty Steven Calicutt (
The Bucs were led at the plate by Crowe, Byrne, Moore and Douglas who each had two hits on the day.
Davidiuk and Betsill each had three hits and drove in two runs for Furman. Wajda led the Paladins with three runs scored.
