JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 3, 2011) - The ETSU baseball team is set to open Atlantic Sun conference play this weekend as the Bucs head to Spartanburg to face USC Upstate this weekend in a three-game series starting Friday at 4 p.m.
The two teams are scheduled to play the second game of the series Saturday at 1 p.m. with the final game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Since joining the Atlantic Sun, the Buccaneers are 10-5 in opening series games including sweeps of Gardner-Webb in 2007 and USC Upstate in 2010.
ETSU (5-2, 0-0 A-Sun) picked up a 13-5 road win over UNC Asheville on Wednesday fueled by an eight-run eighth inning. As a team, the Bucs are hitting .300 with 17 doubles and 11 home runs. The Buccaneer pitching staff is second in the conference in opponent's batting average holding teams to a .221 average while posting a 4.28 ERA.
The Bucs are 12-9 all-time against the Spartans having won the last seven contests including a sweep of USC Upstate on the road in 2009.
The Spartans (4-6, 0-0 A-Sun) have dropped four straight contests after losses to Wofford and Gardner-Webb in the midweek. USC Upstate is led by sophomore outfielder Tyler Miller as he is currently ninth in the conference in average hitting .436 on the year.
