JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Mar. 6, 2012) – After taking two out of three against Indiana over the weekend, the ETSU baseball team hits the road for the first time this season with a Wednesday afternoon matchup against Western Carolina inside Childress Field at Hennon Stadium.
First pitch will begin at 4:00 p.m. and for fans unable to attend the contest, live stats will be available at ETSUBucs.com.
Freshman right-hander Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) (0-0, 3.00), who has made three appearances totaling 6.0 innings this season, will be making the initial start of his college career. Nesselt has given up just two hits and two runs, with six strikeouts and no walks in his time on the mound.
This past weekend, ETSU earned a pair of one run victories against Indiana to earn its second straight series win. The Bucs improved to 4-2 all-time against Indiana after also earning a series win back in 2002.
Sophomore Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) was 6-for-11 (.545) at the plate on the weekend, including a double, home run and two RBIs. Meanwhile, Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) hit .444 with two home runs and three RBIs in the series. John Long (Anderson, S.C.) earned his third win in as many starts with a complete game effort on Friday. In addition, the trio of Jake Long (Anderson, S.C.), Freeman and Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) held Indiana to just four hits and one run in the victory on Sunday.
Freeman leads the Bucs at the plate on the season with a .424 average to go along with three doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBIs. Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) owns a .371 average with five homers and 10 RBIs, while owning a nine-game hitting streak. Meanwhile, Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) (.367, 2 HR, 6 RBI) and Pratt (.333, 2 HR, 5 RBI) have also been key contributors at the plate for the Bucs.
Western Carolina currently sits at 8-3 after most recently sweeping a weekend series over Iona. The Catamounts earned an impressive win over No. 8 Georgia last Wednesday. WCU will face Duke on Tuesday afternoon before facing the Bucs on Wednesday.
Aaron Attaway and Jacob Hoyle lead the Catamounts at the plate through 11 games. Attaway leads the squad with a .469 average to go along with 12 RBIs. Meanwhile, Hoyle is batting .439 with two homers and 17 RBIs.
Western Carolina leads the all-time series against ETSU with a mark of 60-28. The two schools last met in March 2009 with Western Carolina winning both games of a two-game series in Cullowhee.
