JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 13, 2012) – Mark Jones and Mitchel Brennan hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie and starting pitcher Will Dorsey shut down the ETSU bats as the Hatters defeated the Bucs, 4-0, Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Thomas Stadium.
With the victory, Stetson earned the sweep of ETSU, while improving its record to 34-18 and 15-9 in the Atlantic Sun. Meanwhile, the Bucs dropped to 22-29 and 7-17 in conference play. The Stetson pitching staff held ETSU scoreless for the final 20.2 innings of the series.
Dorsey improved his record to 7-5 after tossing 7.1 scoreless innings. Dorsey allowed just seven hits, while striking out six.
ETSU starter Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) was charged with the loss after giving up six hits and three runs in five innings of work. Nesselt walked two and struck out four Stetson batters on the afternoon.
Spencer Theisen led the Hatters with a 3-for-4 day at the plate including an RBI. Robert Crews also had multiple hits as he finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Senior Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.), who played in his final game at Thomas Stadium, led the Buccaneer offense with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, while junior Alex Reynolds (Johnson City, Tenn.) also finished 2-for-4 with a double.
After three scoreless innings of baseball, Stetson got on the board in the fourth after back-to-back home runs by Mark Jones and Mitchel Brennan put the Hatters in front 2-0.
The Hatters added a run in the fifth thanks to a two-out single by Robert Crews and a RBI double by Ben Carhart – giving the Hatters a 3-0 advantage.
Stetson tacked on another insurance run in the eighth inning after Theisen dropped down a RBI bunt single to score Jones, who reached base earlier in the inning on a walk.
ETSU returns to action on Tuesday for its final non-conference game of the season as it travels to Athens, Ga. to take on Georgia at 6:00 p.m.
