MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (June 29, 2012) – After landing Atlantic Sun All-Conference honors last month, Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) added more accolades to his resume as the ETSU outfielder was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-South Region team earlier in June.
Scruggs – who graduated in May with a degree in Sport Management – was the A-Sun leader in home runs with 20 and tied for second nationally. Overall, the 20 homers by Scruggs were the fifth highest in an ETSU single season and were five behind the record setting 25 round trippers by former Buccaneer and current Peoria Chiefs all-star Paul Hoilman, which was set in the 2010 campaign.
In addition to winning the A-Sun home run title, Scruggs ranked third in total bases (129), fourth in slugging percentage (.581), tied for sixth in RBI (46), and tied for 11th in runs scored (44).
The Knoxville, Tenn. native enjoyed a stellar career in the Blue and Gold as Scruggs finished in the top-five in school history for career games played (207), at-bats (802), homers (46) and runs scored (182).
In a 15-3 win against La Salle earlier this season, Scruggs finished a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, five runs scored and five RBI. Just one week earlier, Scruggs recorded a RBI walk-off single against Indiana in the series opener. Meanwhile, Scruggs blasted a home run in his first four games to start the season.
Scruggs was one of six players from the A-Sun to be named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region team.
