Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) and Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) combined to shutout the Blue Team, 5-0, in game two of the Blue/Gold World Series on Saturday afternoon from Thomas Stadium.
Freeman surrendered just two hits in four innings, while Nesselt went three innings and retired all nine batters he faced, striking out four.
The Gold team struck in the first inning when Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) led off with a single and Alex Reynolds (Johnson City) sacrificed him into scoring position. Freeman scored Reynolds, putting Gold up 1-0 on his RBI groundout.
In the top of the fourth, Mason Hershey (Altoona, Pa.) singled and Dylan Powers (Blue Ridge, Va.) continued his hot streak by driving in Hershey with a double off the wall in left-center. Meanwhile, two batters later, Niesman extended Gold's lead to 4-0 with a two-run homer deep to left.
The Gold Team added an insurance run in the fifth when Dylan Tritsch (Boca Raton, Fla.) singled in Jordan Sanford (Powell, Tenn.), who had singled and stole second base.
Overall, Gold was led by Niesman - 2-for-4 with two RBI - while Tritsch posted a pair of hits and two stolen bases. Powers also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Blue team was led by Trey York (Knox, Tenn.) as he recorded the team's only hits of the afternoon.
The rubber match will be decided today with first pitch at slated for noon. Griffen Krieg (Nashville, Tenn.) and Kevin Marnon (Shelby Township, Mich.) will square off on the mound.
