CHARLESTON, S.C., (April 17, 2013) – The Citadel did all its damage in the first three innings as Hughston Armstrong belted a three-run home run in the second and Johnathan Stokes added a two-run shot in the third, as the Bulldogs cruised to a 7-3 victory on Wednesday night from Riley Park.
The Bucs scored two of their three runs in the fourth and added the final run in the ninth, but the seven-run deficit was too big of a hole to dig out of. Senior Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) recorded two of ETSU’s seven hits, while Chris Riopedre (Miami, Fla.) came off the bench to go 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Freshman Griffin Krieg (Nashville, Tenn.) was charged for all seven runs (five earned) and suffered the loss (2-4), but the combination of Jared Burton (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Will Chesney (Knoxville, Tenn.) held the Bulldogs scoreless in the final five innings out of the bullpen. Burton scattered three hits and struck out three in a season-high three innings, while Chesney extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 10.0 by registering two perfect innings to close out the game.
With the loss, ETSU saw its three-game win streak come to an end as the Bucs dipped to 21-13 on the season, while The Citadel won its fourth in a row to improve to 21-17.
The Bulldogs wasted little time putting pressure on the Bucs and scored two first-inning runs without recording a hit to jump out to the 2-0 lead. With one out, Armstrong walked and advanced to second on a fielding error by Alex Reynolds (Johnson City, Tenn.) at third. The error came back to haunt the Blue and Gold as Krieg forced Bo Thompson to fly out to right, which would have ended the inning. However, after gaining another out in the frame, Krieg walked Drew DeKerlegand, and Armstrong and Jo Jackson scored the two unearned runs when Jordan Sanford (Powell, Tenn.) was charged with a fielding and throwing error on Calvin Orth’s roller to short.
The Citadel added to its lead in the bottom of the second when Armstrong’s three-run home run soared over the wall in right, while Stokes got in on the fun when his two-run shot cleared the foul pole in left to put them up, 7-0.
ETSU finally pushed a pair of runs across in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Riopedre, while Reynolds’ two-out single through the right side scored Green – who earlier singled to center.
Unfortunately, like ETSU’s bullpen, the Bulldogs’ relievers shut the door on the Buccaneer offense, as The Citadel pitchers retired 12 of the 13 Blue and Gold hitters following the two-run fourth. Green broke up the streak when he led off the ninth with an infield single and scored the final run of the contest on Riopedre’s RBI single to left; however, Skylar Hunter struck out Reynolds and Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.) looking to end the game.
The Bulldogs also pounded out seven hits as Armstrong was the lone Citadel player to register a multi-hit game. Armstrong went 2-for-3 with the home run and three RBI. Austin Livingston improved to 3-0 after allowing two runs on five hits in four innings of work.
The Bucs continue their five-game road swing on Friday night as ETSU begins a three-game Atlantic Sun series with Stetson in DeLand, Fla. First pitch of the series opener is set for 6:30 p.m. at Melching Field.
