JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 8, 2014) – The ETSU baseball team returns home to take on The Citadel Wednesday night at Thomas Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS
The Bucs (14-17) are coming off a bumpy road swing where the Blue and Gold dropped four of five and were most recently swept by Lipscomb over the weekend.
For the series, sophomore Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.) led ETSU as he went 5 for 10 with two runs and two RBI, while senior Dylan Tritsch (Boca Raton, Fla.) reached base safely in all three games and has accomplished the feat in 18 straight contests.
Seniors Will Chesney (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Jared Burton (Knoxville, Tenn.) combined to register 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Burton struck out four Lipscomb hitters in 2.2 innings and Chesney tossed two scoreless frames.
ABOUT THE CITADEL
The Citadel (13-20) was also swept over the weekend as the Bulldogs lost all three to Georgia Southern in Charleston. Overall, The Citadel has dropped six of its last seven games.
The Bulldogs are led by junior infielder Mason Davis as he leads the team in batting average (.328), hits (44), doubles (7) and runs (20), while senior outfielder Drew DeKerlegand is hitting .308 (36-117) with four doubles, three triples, one home run and 17 runs scored.
Davis ranks fourth in the Southern Conference in hits, and junior first baseman Bo Thompson is fifth in on-base percentage (.454) and tied for seventh in home runs (6).
The Citadel was picked to finish second in the preseason SoCon Coaches Poll, and the Bulldogs had seven players receive preseason all-conference honors.
Wednesday marks the 79th all-time meeting between ETSU and The Citadel.
The Bulldogs lead the series, 51-27, while The Citadel took last year’s meeting, 7-3, in Charleston. The meeting marked the first time the schools met since the Bulldogs defeated ETSU, 4-1, to open the 2010 season.
ETSU’s last win over The Citadel was a 5-3 13-inning victory back on Feb. 10, 2007 in Charleston.
The Citadel is making its first trip to Johnson City since the 2004 season when the Blue and Gold swept the Bulldogs.
ETSU is sending senior right-hander Logan Rice (Erwin, Tenn.) to the bump on Wednesday, while the Bulldogs counter with junior left-hander Kevin Connell.
The matchup pins a pair of local arms as Rice played at Unicoi High School. Connell is from Johnson City and played high school ball at Daniel Boone.
Rice, who is 3-0 with a 3.66 ERA (13 ER/32.0 IP), is making just his second start of the season. Connell is 0-3 with an 8.88 ERA (25 ER/25.1 IP) in 10 appearances (four starts).
