Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Wofford

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The Wofford Terriers used an 18-hit attack to take the first game of a doubleheader, 13-4, and continued its hot hitting with a 9-4 win in the second game to sweep the first two games of a Southern Conference three-game series at East Tennessee State.

Terrier rightfielder Brian Casey enjoyed a stellar afternoon, going 5-9 with four RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader. The Terriers also got outstanding starting pitching. Tate Osterman allowed four runs in the first game while George Lehr allowed four hits in 8.1 innings pitched in the night cap.

In game one, Wofford’s Brian Casey lifted a two-run homer over the right center wall to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. ETSU answered in the home-half of the inning with back-to-back solo homers from Ryan McKinney and Scott Rose. The Terriers’ Danny Shade led off the third with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Chad Livingston. Two more runs scored on a Brian Casey double that gave the visitors a 5-2 lead in the third. Casey went 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored in the opener.

ETSU’s Jeremy Terry doubled and scored to cut the score to 5-3 after three. The shortstop went 3-5 on the day. In the fourth, McKinney doubled and scored on an RBI groundout from Kirk Keithley. Wofford took an 8-4 lead with three runs in the fifth, before adding two more in the sixth to carry a 10-4 advantage after six innings.

The Terriers added three runs on five hits in the eighth to take a 13-4 lead. Steve Casey doubled and scored in the frame. With the win, Wofford’s Osterman improved to 5-2 after allowing four runs on 11 hits. Buc starter Reid Casey fell to 2-5.

Wofford scored first in game two when D.J. Rhodes singled and scored on a Kevin Bowyer single. The Bucs scored two in the fourth to take a one-run lead. Nathan Copeland was hit by a pitch and later scored while Brandon Cross reached on an error and scored.

The visitors regained the lead with two runs in the fifth. Steve Casey walked, moved to second when Brian Casey singled. They both moved up on a wild pitch before a Tommy Todd sac fly scored Steve. Brian Casey came home on a Rhodes single. The Terriers extended their lead to 7-2 with four in the sixth. The only hit of the frame was a single by Todd.

Rhodes doubled home Todd and then scored on a single by Strat Stavrou to give the Terriers a 9-2 lead heading in the eighth. The Bucs added two in the ninth to complete the second game. Keithley recorded an RBI single in the frame.

Five Buc players notched one hit in the second game. Wofford catcher D.J. Rhodes recorded a game-high three hits and scored two runs while knocking in two.

ETSU and Wofford will complete the three-game set at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
