Furman defeats ETSU Baseball, 8-0

(May 10, 2003) - Furman got strong starting pitching for the second consecutive night to defeat East Tennessee State, 8-0, Saturday night from Furman Baseball Stadium in Greeneville, S.C. Furman opened the scoring in tonight's game, putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the second. With one out in the inning, Paladin designated hitter Sam McLain hit a solo home run over the right field wall. Then with two down in the second, right fielder Cole Hubka hit a triple to right-center then came home as center fielder Andrew Greene reached on an error. The Paladins added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the third. Furman second baseman Clint Hill led off the inning by reaching on an error. He moved to second as the next batter, left fielder Craig Caudill, walked. After ETSU turned a double play advancing Hill to third, first baseman Dominic Frankey drove in the runner with a double down the left field line. With a single run in the bottom of the fifth, Furman ran their lead to 4-0 over the Bucs. Hill led off the inning with a double, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then crossed the plate on a one-out single by catcher Derek Norman. Furman scored another single run in the bottom of the sixth. Greene hit a single to right field with one out, stole second and moved to third on an error. He came home with Furman's fifth run of the night on a single by Hill. The Paladins put their final three runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Third baseman Matthew Bestill led the frame off with a walk and moved to second when Greene was hit by a pitch. With two down in the inning, Hill walked to load the bases. A balk forced Bestill home, and Greene and Hill then crossed the plate on a single to center by Caudill. Furman starter Tom Mastny (10-2) dominated on the mound, pitching a complete game and allowing just three Buccaneer hits. Mastny held the Bucs hitless until ETSU left fielder Bo Calloway (Knoxville, Tenn.)singled to lead off the sixth inning. Mastny hit two Buc batters and had a career-high 11 strikeouts on the night. East Tennessee State freshman starter Jeremy Hall (Gray, Tenn.) was charged with the loss (0-4) after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing four runs, two of which were earned. He gave up seven hits and one walk on the night. Buccaneer sophomore second baseman Justin Clear (LaFollette, Tenn.) and junior shortstop Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.) accounted for the final two Buccaneer hits, hitting consecutive singles in the ninth. Hill, Norman, Frankey and Greene led the Paladins with two hits each. Hill also scored three runs on the evening while Caudill drove in two. The third and final game of the weekend set between the Bucs and Paladins will begin tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. from Furman Baseball Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
