ASHEVILLE, N.C. (May 3, 2003) -- UNC Asheville scored three times in the bottom ofthe ninth inning to win the first game and then got great pitching in the second game to earn a doubleheader sweep over visiting East Tennessee State Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field. ETSU fell 5-4 in game one and lost game two by a score of 6-3.

Asheville improved to 21-23, while the Buccaneers fell to 14-29 overall. ETSU led 4-0 in the first game and 2-0 in the second before the Bulldogs rallied for wins each game.

The Bucs led 4-2 entering the bottom of the ninth when the Bulldogs rallied. Pinch-hitter Charles Pippitt led the inning off with his first homer of the year to cut the lead to 4-3. Pinch-hitter Todd Coggins followed with a single to put the tying run on first.

After a fielder's choice erased Coggins and put Robert Rudder on first base, the Bucs went to the bullpen and brought in Josh Kite (Greeneville, Tenn.). Kite's first pitch was driven to left-field for a double by Jake McConiga and runners were on second and third with one out.

ETSU brought on Willie McKenzie (Kingsport, Tenn.) to face pinch-hitter Josh Coyle. Coyle singled to right to score Rudder and tie the game at 4-4. Right-fielder Jodran Abromovitz's (South Park, Pa.) throw sailed to the backstop for an error allowing McConiga to score the winning run and give the Dogs a 5-4 win.

The Bucs had led 4-0 on an RBI-single from Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the third inning, a two-run homer from Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.) in the fourth and a sacrifice fly from Moore in the fifth.

ETSU starter Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) pitched shutout ball until the fifth inning  when Steve Sherman had an RBI-single to cut the lead to 4-1. Another Sherman RBI-single made it 4-2.

The first game victory went to starter Aaron Rembert (6-4) who pitched a complete game, allowing four runs, 11 hits and striking out four.

In the second game, the Bucs got an RBI-double from Chad Boruff (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the second inning and a solo homer from Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.) in the fifth to lead 2-0. The Bulldogs roared back with three runs in the sixth to take the lead.

An RBI-single from Grant Rembert and an RBI-double from Drew Sandri tied the game at 2-2. An error plated Sandri for a 3-2 Asheville lead.

The Bucs tied the game in seventh on an RBI-double from Shane Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) but UNCA came right back to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh.

Sherman drove in his third run of the afternoon on a sacrifice fly for a 4-3 lead. Asheville got insurance in the eighth with two runs. One run scored on a double-play ball, while Robert Rudder drove in the final run of the game on a run-scoring double.

The win went to Judson Ballard (4-6).  He went seven innings,scattering seven hits, allowing just two earned runs, striking out five and walking two. Seth Denton earned his fifth save of the year by pitching the final two innings. He did walk his first batter of the year in 17 appearances.

Jarrod Hyder (Elizabethton,Tenn.) took the loss for the Bucs and fell to 6-2.  Howdeshell enjoyed a great game for the Bucs as he went 4-for-5. He finished the day by going 7-for-10.

Scott Stotlar led the Dogs at the plate with three hits and a run scored. Rudder and Sandri each had two hits for UNCA.

UNC Asheville and East Tennessee State will play Sunday night in Johnson City at Cardinal Park starting at 7 p.m.
