Buccaneer Baseball falls to Tennessee Tech, 10-8

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (May 5, 2004) - East Tennessee State had their four-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night as Tennessee Tech defeated the Bucs 10-8 from Bush Stadium in Cookeville, Tenn. The Bucs (25-23) got on the board early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Sophomore right fielder Shane Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) reached on an error, then moved to third on consecutive passed balls. Junior catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) followed with his 24th double of the season, scoring Byrne from third. With two outs, sophomore designated hitter Steven Calicutt (Spartanburg, S.C.) hit a single to left, bringing Moore around from second. Tennessee Tech (14-23) stormed back with four runs to take the lead in the bottom of the third. Grant French led off the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a single by the next batter, Philip Hatch. French scored on a single to left prior to a three-run homer by Brent Bilodeau. The Golden Eagles added another run in the bottom of the fourth. French had another big hit, belting a solo homer to left center with two outs. East Tennessee State tied the game by manufacturing three runs in the top of the sixth. Moore and sophomore first baseman Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.) led off the inning with back-to-back singles up the middle. Then with two outs, sophomore second baseman Josiah Glafenhein (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled to left, scoring Moore from second. Following a balk, sophomore third baseman Greg Roberts (Douglas, Ga.) singled up the middle to drive in both Church and Glafenhein. TTU responded by batting around and scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead, 10-5. Bilodeau walked to lead off the inning, followed by a double by Britt Clubb. With one down, J.D. Druckenmiller hit a three-run homer over the left-center field wall. Kenny Stiles and Josh Eye hit RBI singles to drive in the final two runs of the inning. The Bucs trimmed a run off the Golden Eagle lead in the top of the seventh, as Moore hammered his eighth home run of the season over the right-center field wall. Moore struck again in the top of the ninth, doubling home Byrne, who led off the inning with a walk. The Bucs had the bases loaded with no outs, but could only get one run across as Roberts forced a run in with a two-out walk. Kyle Copeland (1-2) earned the win for Tennessee Tech, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing one run on two hits, striking out one. Buccaneer senior lefty Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) was charged with the loss (5-7), allowing eight runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings. Moore led the Bucs at the plate, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Church went 3-for-4 on the night for ETSU. Tennessee Tech was led by Hatch, who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Stiles, Bilodeau and French also had two hits for the Golden Eagles. East Tennessee State returns to the diamond on May 13 at 7 p.m. as they travel to Morgantown, W.Va to face West Virginia University in the opener of a three-game non-conference series.
