SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Apr. 11, 2004) -- East Tennessee State sophomore lefty Steven Calicutt (Spartanburg, S.C.) returned to his hometown and pitched 7.2 innings to pick up the victory as the Buccaneers completed a three-game sweep of Wofford Sunday afternoon with an 8-6 win at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg, S.C. Calicutt (4-5) allowed six runs in the opening three innings before holding Wofford scoreless the next 4.2 innings. He allowed six runs on 10 hits while striking out nine and walking five. Freshman righty Brandon Summey (Kingsport, Tenn.) relieved Calicutt with two runners on and two out in the bottom of the eighth. After David Long reached on an infield single to load the bases, Summey escaped the jam as Stephen Johnson hit a deep fly that Buc sophomore center fielder Matt Traylor (Knoxville, Tenn.) caught against the wall in right-center. Singles by pinch hitter David Dufour and Scott Holloway in the ninth put two runners on with two outs. Summey then struck out pinch hitter Casey Dwyer to end the game and earn his second save of the weekend and season. Wofford outhit ETSU 13-11 but stranded 12 runners on base, including five in the last two innings. Terrier freshman Austin Redwine replaced starter Ryan Beaton (1-1) in the third inning and retired the first 11 batters he faced. Redwine tossed 6.2 shutout innings, surrendering five hits. He fanned three while not walking a batter. ETSU's first five batters reached base as the Buccaneers took a 5-0 first-inning lead. Following a leadoff walk to Traylor, sophomore right fielder Shane Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) doubled him home as ETSU (17-19, 8-10 Southern Conference) scored first for the third straight game in the series. Freshman left fielder Stephen Douglas (Kennesaw, Ga.) followed with his team-leading sixth home run of the year to extend the Buccaneer margin to 3-0. An RBI groundout by freshman designated hitter David Yates (Douglasville, Ga.) and a run-scoring double by sophomore third baseman Greg Roberts (Douglas, Ga.) capped the inning. Wofford (10-18, 3-12 SoCon) answered with four runs in its half of the first inning. Designated hitter Jesse Cole drove in the first run with a single before Zach Pittman doubled off the leftcenter wall to score two runs. Anthony Dinardo plated Pittman with a double to pull the Terriers within 5-4. A dropped pop up in the top of the second led to three unearned ETSU runs as the Buccaneers built their lead back to 8-4. Sophomore second baseman Josiah Glafenhein (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove in two runs with a two-out single before senior shortstop Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.) scored from third on the back end of a double steal. A Dinardo single, his second hit of the game, scored Cole from third in the bottom of the third to pull Wofford within 8-5. Scott Holloway's sacrifice bunt later in the inning brought home Pittman to cut the Terrier deficit to 8-6. That would be all the scoring for the remainder of the game. Sophomore first baseman Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.) had three hits to pace the Buccaneer attack. Douglas and Glafenhein drove in two runs each while Traylor, Douglas and Howdeshell scored twice. Dinardo, Cole, Holloway and Carbone all had two hits for Wofford. Dinardo and Pittman had two RBI. East Tennessee State continues on the road to face Radford in a Wednesday 3 p.m. contest from Dedmon Center Field in Radford, Va.
