JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Mar. 22, 2004) - East Tennessee State is set to host in-state rival Tennessee, Tuesday night at 7 p.m. from Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bucs are 12-13 after dropping two of three this past weekend in a SoCon series against UNC Greensboro. The Vols are ranked as high as No. 13 in weekly college baseball polls and come into the game at 19-3 after taking two of three from Mississippi State. Junior catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) leads the Bucs with a .429 batting average and is tied for the team lead with four home runs. Freshman designated hitter/outfielder Stephen Douglas (Kennesaw, Ga.) has hit in nine-straight games to raise hit average to .362, second on the team. Sophomore outfielder Shane Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) is batting .333 with three homers and 19 RBIs while sophomore first baseman Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.) is hitting .323 with two home runs and a team-best 25 runs batted in. Tennessee is led at the plate by Michael Rivera and Eric King, who are tied for the team lead with a .370 batting average. In fact, eight regular starters in the UT lineup are batting .300 or better. Josh Alley has a team-high four home runs while Chris Kemp leads the Vols with 24 RBIs. Senior lefty Josh Kite (Greeneville, Tenn.) is scheduled to start for the Bucs while Mike Kerfeld will get the call for Vols. Kite is 0-1 with a 7.90 ERA in 11 appearances while Kerfeld has posted a 2-0 record and a 0.89 ERA in four games this season. Moore as well as five other Buccaneer players are from the Knoxville area while Tennessee players Brandon and Nick Crowe will be having a homecoming as they attended Science Hill High School in Johnson City. The first 250 fans in attendance wearing blue and gold will receive a pair of Buccaneer Thunderstix while all fans in attendance will have a chance to win $100 in the Triad Packaging "Throw for Dough." Fans not able to be in attendance can listen to the game on WJCW 910-AM in the Tri-Cities.
