SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 25, 2004) - East Tennessee State sophomore baseball player Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.) has been named the TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for February 25.
Church, a catcher and first baseman on the Buccaneers' baseball team, had an excellent week at the plate, leading the Bucs to a 4-1 record. He hit .429 last week with six hits in 14 at-bats with a homer and seven RBI in five games played. For the season, Church is third on the team with a .333 batting average and leads the squad with his seven runs batted in.
In this past weekend's series against Xavier, Church hit .545 with six hits in 11 at bats. In Saturday's second game, Blake went 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the 6-1 victory. His two-run single in the bottom of the first turned out to be the game-winning hit. In Sunday's second game, Church went 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBIs in ETSU's 10-6 win. He again got the Bucs on the board quickly with a two-run single in the bottom of the first that turned out to be another game-winning hit. Blake also iced the game for the Bucs with a towering two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
Church is also a standout in the classroom, with a 3.227 GPA, majoring in pre-business.
