JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 19, 2003) - Robbie Campbell (Lothian, Md.), a talented right-handed pitcher from DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Md., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for East Tennessee State beginning in the 2005 season. DeMatha is one of the top baseball programs in the country, finishing 15th in the final USA Today rankings last season and earning a No. 29 preseason ranking by the publication. Campbell has been the ace of the Stags' rotation, as the team won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference in 2002 and 2003. DeMatha finished the 2003 season ranked No. 1 in the Washington, D.C. metro area. Robbie was the starting and winning pitcher in the 2003 WCAC championship game and pitched a complete game shutout to lead DeMatha to the 2002 championship. As a junior, Campbell was 8-1 with a 1.43 ERA, striking out 56 batters in 59 innings. He allowed just 30 hits and 12 earned runs on the season. He was named first-team all-conference and first-team All-Metropolitan by The Washington Post. The 6'2, 185 pounder was also dazzling during his first two seasons at DeMatha, going 6-1 with a 2.30 ERA as a sophomore and 3-1 with a 1.50 ERA as a freshman. He struck out 104 batters in 83 innings over those two seasons, allowing just 54 hits and 23 earned runs. Following his sophomore season, he was named second-team all-conference and first-team all-county by the Prince George's Journal and the Prince George's Gazette. "I am thrilled and I feel very fortunate that Robbie Campbell has signed a National Letter of Intent with East Tennessee State," said Buccaneer head coach Tony Skole Wednesday morning. "Robbie has already had a very accomplished high school career. His high school baseball program is one of the best in the country and Robbie is considered one of the best right-handed pitchers in the state of Maryland. Robbie is a tremendous young man who will have a bright future at ETSU, both on the baseball field and in the classroom. I am proud of the fact that our program is beginning to provide an environment that some of the top players in the country like Robbie Campbell want to be a part of."
