ETSU Baseball drops close game to Belmont, 4-1

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 18, 2008) - The ETSU baseball team fell to Belmont Friday night at Cardinal Park in a low scoring game, 4-1.

 

ETSU (10-28, 7-15) was out hit by the Bruins 12-7 and stranded nine runners. Brandon Langston (Ringgold, Ga.) had a good start as he went seven innings allowing three runs (only two earned) on 11 hits and struck out three while walking two. Belmont pitcher Carlo Test outdueled Langston as he went 7.2 innings and allowed one run on seven hits and struck out eight while walking one.

 

Carlos Testa got the scoring started in the top of the first as he singled in a run, but was thrown out by Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) to kill the Belmont rally. The Bruins added another run in the top of the third on a grounder to second by Packy Elkins to make the score 2-0.

 

In the top of the fifth, Belmont added to its lead on a RBI single by Derek Wiley to take a 3-0 lead. The Bucs cut into the Bruin lead in the bottom of the seventh as Danny Petro (Atlanta, Ga.) \doubled in Jacob Fabry (Chattanooga, Tenn.) to make the score 3-1.

 

The Bruins added to their lead in the top of the ninth as Vinny Casha drove in a run on a grounder to third to give Belmont a 4-1 lead.

 

Petro increased his hitting streak to 15 games with his double in the seventh, and Chris Rankhorn (Gallatin, Tenn.) had a good game for the Bucs both offensively and defensively as he went 2-for-4 with a double.

 

The Bucs are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. as they host Belmont in game two of the series. All kids will be admitted for free in correlation with Blue Day.
