JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 30, 2009) - For the second straight week an ETSU player was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week as senior Troy Mendez (Roswell, Ga.) earned the honor announced the conference office Monday.
One week after Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) slugged his way to the hitting honor; Mendez followed Reeder's lead by helping the Buccaneers to a 3-1 week and continued the team's winning streak, one that ultimately reached five in a row. The senior outfielder hit .450 on the week (9-for-20) with a double, two home runs including a grand slam, scored seven runs and drove in 13. Mendez had an incredible seven RBI against Mercer in the second game of the series as the Bucs went on to win 12-8 and took their second straight conference series.
The senior also had five RBI in the UNC Asheville game as the Bucs completed the sweep of the Bulldogs. The Roswell, Ga. native slugged .800 on the week and had an on base percentage of .500. Mendez is currently tied for the team lead in RBI with 13 and is second in hits with 31 and home runs with five.
