Camels pound Bucs in series opener 17-8

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (April 23, 2010) - After the ETSU baseball jumped out to an early  8-5 lead, Campbell scored 12 unanswered runs to defeat the Bucs 17-8 Friday in the first game of the series at Taylor Field in Buies Creek, N.C.


Junior Chas Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) was tabbed with the loss for the Bucs (20-17, 9-7 A-Sun) surrendering ten runs (nine earned) on 11 hits in 3.2 innings of work.


Campbell reliever Jonathan Lopez picked up the win for the Camels (20-19, 6-13 A-Sun) throwing six scoreless innings limiting the Bucs to only three hits.


Catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) led ETSU offensively going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and scored three runs. Shortstop Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) also was 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs.


Trent gave the Bucs an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first as he knocked a three-run home run over the fence in right.


The Camels answered in the bottom half scoring two runs on a double down the left field line by Alex Aycoth to cut the Buccaneer lead to 3-2.


ETSU added a run in the second inning as Michael Gonzalez (Jupiter, Fla.) came in to score on a Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) single up the middle to make the score 4-2.


In the bottom of the second, the Camels grabbed a 5-4 lead scoring three runs on a D.J. Johnson sac fly and a two-run double by Ellis Lowe.


The Bucs started the third inning with five-straight hits scoring four runs in the inning to retake the lead 8-5. A two-run single by Doane and a two-run double by second baseman Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) highlighted the inning for the Bucs.


Cameron Nelson singled in a run for the Camels in the bottom of the third to cut the ETSU lead to 8-6.


After holding the Bucs scoreless in the fourth, Campbell regained the lead 10-8 scoring four runs on four hits including a bases clearing double by catcher Bryan Braswell.


Zach Johnson increased the Camels lead to 13-8 in the fifth as he drove a three-run home run over the fence in left.


Campbell continued the onslaught adding another run in the sixth as Nelson came in to score on a D.J. Johnson single to make the score 14-8 Camels.


In the seventh, CU added two more runs on an ETSU error and a Braswell hit to take a 16-8 lead.


The Camels added one more in the eighth on a RBI single by Josh Holskey to make the final 17-8.
