JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 5, 2010) - The ETSU baseball team saw its six-game win steak snapped Friday afternoon at Cardinal Park as the Bucs dropped a 10-2 decision to 30th ranked St. John's in the first game of a three-game series.

Junior Chas Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) had a tough outing for the Bucs (6-2) as he was knocked out of the game after four innings giving up eight runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Bruce Kern picked up the win for St. John's (7-0) going 5.1 innings limiting ETSU to two runs on three hits to improve to 2-0 on the year.

The Red Storm exploded in the top of the first for four runs on five hits to take a 4-0 advantage.

St. John's added two more runs in the top of the second on a RBI ground out to short by Greg Hopkins and a RBI single by Joe Panik to extend its lead to 6-0.

Hopkins and Panik combined for two more runs in the top of the fourth on a RBI double down the left field line by Hopkins and a Panik RBI single to make the score 8-0 Red Storm.

The Bucs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) came in to score on a ball hit to short by Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) to cut the STJ lead to 8-1. ETSU added another run in the inning as second baseman Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) came in to score on a wild pitch make the score 8-2.

Freshman Derek Bushey (Richmond, Va.) pitched well in relief for the Bucs as he came into the game in the fifth and allowed only one run in 3.2 innings of work while striking out six.

In the bottom of the sixth, ETSU loaded the bases after Byrne walk, but St. John's reliever Matt Carasiti struck out Cory Betterson (Atlanta, Ga.) looking to end the inning and escape the Buccaneer threat.

The Red Storm put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth on a two-run double by first baseman Paul Karmas to make the final 10-2 STJ.

The Bucs are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. as they face St. John's in game two of the series. Please visit www.ETSUBucs.com for more information on ETSU baseball and all other Buccaneer athletic news.
