Eagles complete the series sweep of Bucs, 15-8

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 9, 2010) - The ETSU baseball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast 15-8 Sunday at Swanson Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla. as the Eagles completed the series sweep of the Bucs.

 

Starter Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) was tabbed with the loss for the Bucs (27-21, 14-10 A-Sun) after giving up 11 runs (six earned) on 11 hits while striking out one with two walks.

 

Pete Woodworth earned the victory for Florida Gulf Coast (31-16, 20-4 A-Sun) throwing 6.0 innings limiting the ETSU offense to two runs (one earned) scattering seven hits and striking out six.

 

Freshman Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) had a team-best three hits in the game for the Bucs, while Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) also had three hits and drove in a pair.

 

The Eagles exploded for six runs on five hits in the first inning to take an early 6-0 lead. A two-run double by Zach Maxfield highlighted the scoring for FGCU.

 

Tim Roberson added a run in the second driving in Mikel Alvarez on a sacrifice fly to center to make the score 7-0.

 

In the third, after a Austin Gaines double, Stephen Wickens tripled to right to score Gaines to give Florida Gulf Coast a 8-0 lead.

 

The Bucs got on the board in the top of the fourth as Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) came around to score on a FGCU throwing error to cut the Eagle lead to 8-1.

 

ETSU got another run in the fifth to cut the lead to 8-2 as Chas Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) came in to score on a ball hit to third by Garrett May (Marietta, Ga.).

 

Florida Gulf Coast answered in the bottom half of the fifth scoring three runs on singles by Wickens and Roberson to take an 11-2 advantage.

 

A two-run double by Scruggs in the seventh cut the FGCU lead to 11-4.

 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles scored four insurance runs on two hits and two Buccaneer errors to go in front 15-4.

 

Reeder came in to score on a ball hit to short by Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) in the eighth to make the score 15-5.

 

The Bucs scored three runs in the ninth on a ball hit to short by Hoilman, a RBI single by Trent and a Doane sac fly to make the final 15-8.
