JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 14, 2011) - Juniors Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) swept the Atlantic Sun Player and Pitcher of the Week honors as the ETSU baseball team went 4-0 last week, the conference office announced on Monday.
"This is a great honor for Matthew and Bo," said head coach Tony Skole. "Both of them have been playing at a high level all season. The effort, passion and competitiveness that they bring to our program every day is what makes them such great players. When they get it going, it sure is fun to watch."
The pair became the first ETSU duo to sweep the weekly awards since joining the A-Sun in 2006. The Bucs have had 11 player of the week and five pitcher of the week honorees since joining the conference.
Scruggs, the A-Sun Player of the Week, had one of his best weeks as a Buccaneer as the centerfielder hit .353 on the week including back-to-back game winning hits against UNF. Scruggs roped a two-run triple in game one to put the Bucs up 4-0 as ETSU went on to win 6-4. The Knoxville, Tenn. native then delivered a two-run game winning home run in the ninth inning of game two to wrap up the series win over the Ospreys.
On the week, Scruggs drove in six runs on a triple and two home runs, while scoring five runs. The player of the week honor is the first for Scruggs and the first for ETSU since May 3, 2010 when Reeder earned the award.
Reeder was a perfect 4-for-4 for the Bucs in save opportunities for the Bucs on the week. The two-way player totaled four saves throwing 4.0 scoreless innings of relief while striking out four. The honor is the third for Reeder who was named the A-Sun Player of the Week twice.
On the season, Reeder has picked up seven saves in eight appearances and is tied for the national lead with Branden Kline of Virginia and Nick Pepitone of Tulane.
