GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 5, 2011) - Despite Paul Hoilman's (Johnson City, Tenn.) Atlantic Sun career record tying 58th home run, the ETSU baseball team fell 14-5 to Furman Tuesday night at Latham Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins (14-15, 6-5 SoCon) outhit the Bucs (16-9, 8-5 A-Sun) 15-8 in the contest as Furman had three players with three hits in the contest. Hoilman was the lone Buccaneer with multiple hits as he went 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs and three RBI.
Freshman Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) was tagged with his second loss of the season after giving up seven runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
Daniel Stallsmith earned the win for Furman limiting the Bucs to one run on four hits in 3.0 innings.
Catcher Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) gave ETSU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as he singled in Hoilman from second.
The Paladins would answer in the bottom off the first scoring five runs on four hits including a two-run home run by Wade Miller and a three-run homer by Paul Nitto to go in front 5-1.
Miller homered again in the bottom of the second as he crushed a three-run shot to left to increase the Furman lead to 8-1.
In the bottom of the third, the Paladins added two more runs after an RBI groundout by Rob Fondu and a RBI single by Will Owens to make the score 10-1.
Furman put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth as the Paladins jumped out a 14-1 advantage after plating four runs on five hits and a Buccaneer error.
After Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn) and Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) walked to lead off the seventh, Hoilman deposited his A-Sun tying 58th home run over the fence in left center to cut the Paladins lead to 14-4. Belmont's Derek Wiley previously held the record after hitting 58 homers from 2006-09.
Later in the inning, second baseman Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) singled up the middle scoring Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) from third to make the score 14-5.
Jay Friedman, Drake Browne and Mike Waller combined to shut down the ETSU offense in the final 2.2 innings for the Paladins to close out the game.
The Bucs are back in action tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. as they host Appalachian State in non-conference game. For more information on ETSU baseball and all other Buccaneer athletic news please visit
