JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Mar. 12, 2012) – After clinching its third straight series on Sunday, the ETSU baseball team returns to action for a pair of midweek games against Southern Conference foes Furman and Wofford.
The Bucs will host Furman on Tuesday at 3:05 p.m. inside Thomas Stadium and will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to face Wofford on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Live stats will be available through Gametracker at ETSUBucs.com. In addition, Wednesday’s game at Wofford will have a live audio stream on ETSUBucs.com as well.
ETSU will go with Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) on the mound against Furman’s Tyler Wood. Nesselt is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 10 innings of work. Nesselt leads ETSU with a .118 opponent batting average. Wood is 2-1 with a 4.97 ERA in 12.2 innings of work.
The Bucs will send freshman Will Carter (Johnson City, Tenn.) to the mound on Wednesday against Mason Bradley of Wofford. Carter is 0-1 with a 3.52 ERA in 7.2 innings of work. Bradley owns a 4.05 ERA in 6.2 innings so far this season.
ETSU won two out of three games against La Salle at home over the weekend. The Bucs defeated the Explorers 9-6 in the series opener on Friday and won the finale on Sunday 15-3. La Salle took game two 6-3 on Saturday.
Senior Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the way for the Bucs in the series after hitting .584 on the weekend. Scruggs had an incredible performance in Sunday’s finale as he went a perfect 5-for-5 with two homers, five runs scored and five RBI. In addition, he was just a double away from hitting for the cycle. For the season, Scruggs is hitting .385 with a league-leading eight home runs with 17 RBI.
Meanwhile, Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) has been ETSU’s hottest hitter so far this season as he leads the team with a .400 batting average. Freeman has six doubles, a triple, two home runs and 12 RBI on the season.
Senior Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.), who has reached base in every contest this season, is batting .341 with three home runs and eight RBI. Pratt is just behind Scruggs with a .453 on-base percentage.
Furman enters the contest with an even 8-8 record and the Paladins are coming off a conference series against College of Charleston in which they dropped all three contests. Will Owens leads Furman with a .424 batting average, while Will Miller is the team’s biggest power threat as he leads the squad with four home runs. He is the only member of the team with multiple home runs.
Wofford is also 8-8 on the season after most recently dropping two out of three against Eastern Kentucky. The Terriers are led by Stephan Cantrell and Mac Doyle as both are batting over .400. Doyle leads the squad with three home runs.
The Bucs return home to open Atlantic Sun play this weekend with a three-game series against Belmont beginning on Friday at Thomas Stadium. Friday’s game will be at 2:05 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday game times beginning at 1:05 p.m.
