NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mar. 30, 2012) – Second baseman Zak Messer drilled a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to give Lipscomb (11-16, 4-3 A-Sun) its first lead of the game and the Bison held on to defeat ETSU (14-10, 3-4 A-Sun), 6-2, Friday evening at Dugan Field.
Starting pitcher Conner Sinclair (4-1) earned the victory after allowing six hits, two runs and two walks, while striking out five in seven innings of work. Tyler Burstrom came on in relief to toss two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Bison. Meanwhile, John Long (Anderson, S.C.) (4-3) was charged with the loss after going five innings with seven hits, three runs, three walks and four strikeouts.
M.L. Williams, Tyson Ashcraft and Taylor Stewart each had two hits to pace Lipscomb. Zak Messer, Griffin Moore and Zach Lowery had two RBI apiece.
Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) paced the ETSU with a hit and an RBI apiece. Scruggs drilled his league-leading 11th home run of the season. Every batter in the ETSU lineup reached base in the game, but the Bucs left nine runners on base.
ETSU wasted no time by taking a lead in the top of the first inning. After Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) grounded out to leadoff the game, Scruggs followed with his league-leading 11th home run of the season, just over the left field wall to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
Lipscomb answered in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Moore. Lee Wilson led off the inning with a single to center field and Williams followed with a single through the right side to put runners on first and second with no outs. After Messer reached on a fielder’s choice that put runners on the corners with one out, Moore recorded his 13th RBI of the season on the sac fly to tie the game 1-1.
The Bucs regained the lead in the second thanks to an RBI single by Green. Doane led off the inning with a double to the left center field gap. Green followed with his sixth RBI of the season on a lined shot right up the middle to give ETSU the 2-1 lead.
Lipscomb took its first lead of the game thanks to the bat of Messer as he drilled a two-run homer deep over the left field wall. After Long issued a one-out walk to Williams, Messer drilled the first pitch he saw deep over the left field wall for his eighth homer of the season to give the Bison a 3-2 lead.
The Bison added three insurance runs in the seventh on two hits – one of them being a two-run homer by Lowery. Williams led off the inning with a triple off the wall and Messer followed with a walk to put runners on the corners with no outs. Moore then recorded his second RBI sacrifice fly as Williams scored from third. Then, Lowery deposited the 2-2 pitch from relief pitcher Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) deep over the left field wall for his second homer of the season.
ETSU and Lipscomb will continue the three-game series tomorrow beginning at 3:00 p.m. (ET). ETSU junior Derek Bushey (Richmond, Va.) (2-2) will be matched up against Lipscomb’s Blake Fonfara (2-3).
- With his hit in the sixth inning, Clinton Freeman has now reached base in 18 consecutive games. Freeman has also recorded a hit in eight straight games.
- Andrew Green extended his hitting streak to nine straight games after going 1-for-3 with an RBI on the night.
- After winning its first four Friday games of the season, ETSU has now dropped its last three Friday games.
- The Bucs fall to 1-8 on the season when allowing their opponent to score more than six runs.
- Lipscomb now leads the all-time series against ETSU 14-13.
