MACON, Ga. (Jan. 31, 2013) – The Atlantic Sun Conference released its 2013 Baseball Preseason All-Conference awards on Thursday afternoon, and junior Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) took home the top honor among first basemen.
Freeman – who started all 55 games for the Bucs in 2012 – led ETSU in batting average (.365), hits (81), doubles (14), and RBI (50). In addition, the Buccaneer standout also led among the A-Sun leaders, as Freeman tied for second in hits, ranked fourth in average and RBI, sixth in slugging percentage (.550), and tied for 10th in home runs (7).
Not only was Freeman considered one of the top players in the A-Sun, he also ranked in the top 100 nationally in batting average (65th) and in RBIs per game (89th, 0.91).
In 2012, Freeman enjoyed a massive streak of reaching base safely in 40 consecutive games from March 2 through May 6, while also registering the longest hitting streak on the team with 11 straight games with at least one hit. Meanwhile, as a sophomore, Freeman tallied 18 multi-hit games and drove in two or more runs in 13 contests.
USC Upstate’s Gaither Bumgardner was selected Preseason Player of the Year, while Ricky Knapp of Florida Gulf Coast received Preseason Pitcher of the Year accolades. Meanwhile, Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast were tied for first in the preseason coaches poll with 81 total votes.
