DURHAM, N.C. (May 28, 2013) – East Tennessee State University senior right-handed pitcher Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was named one of 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, announced USA Baseball on Tuesday.

Doane – who was named Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year and Tournament Most Valuable Player – is 13-1 with a 1.99 ERA (31 ER/140.0 IP) in 19 appearances (16 starts) this season. The Buccaneer hurler leads the NCAA in complete games (12) and innings pitched and is also tied for the nation’s lead with four shutouts.

“This is yet another great honor for Kerry. He has displayed what it means to be a true competitor and what it means to have the heart of a warrior,” said head coach Tony Skole. “What Kerry has accomplished this year is truly amazing and I don’t know if I will ever witness another season like the one he has had. What makes his individual accomplishments so special is the fact that he is such a great teammate and such a humble young man.”

In his first full season as a pitcher, Doane broke the single-season ETSU record for complete games and innings pitched, while tying the single season program mark for wins and shutouts. Since suffering his lone setback on March 16, Doane has won his last 10 decisions and has a 1.94 ERA (19 ER/88.0 IP) over that stretch. In addition, the right-hander has pitched 134 of the total 146 innings in his starts, while registering five straight complete games from March 23 through April 19, and back-to-back shutouts against Marist (3/1) and Rhode Island (3/10).

Doane has also been named to the National Player of the Year and Gregg Olson Breakout Player of the Year Watch Lists.

The list of 30 semifinalists will be cut to three on June 4, while the winner will be announced live on July 19 on MLB Network’s The Rundown. Fans can also vote for their winner by visiting GoldenSpikesAward.com.

“USA Baseball congratulates each of the 30 student-athletes and their respective baseball programs," said Paul Seiler, USA Baseball Executive Director/CEO. "The move to MLB Network two years ago was a significant step toward increasing exposure for the award among players, schools and fans, and we look forward to building on that excitement for 2013. We wish all of the semifinalists the best of luck."
