Freeman one of 57 players to receive the accolade

FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 19, 2013) – Senior Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.) was one of the key pieces to ETSU’s championship success in 2013, and the Buccaneer two-way standout was recognized for his efforts as he received third team preseason All-America honors by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on Wednesday. Freeman was tabbed as a utility player.

Freeman earned Slugger All-America accolades at the end of last season, while also being tabbed second team All-Atlantic Sun as he led the Buccaneers in nearly every offensive category. In addition, Freeman was one of 25 players placed on the watch list for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award in 2013.

The left-handed slugger/hurler led the Blue and Gold in batting average (.335), hits (80), doubles (18), triples (4), home runs (10), RBI (57), and slugging percentage (.569). On the mound, the left-hander went 7-1 with a 3.04 ERA (19 ER/56.1 IP) and eight saves in 25 appearances (three starts). In Freeman’s 22 relief appearances, the southpaw went 6-0 with a 0.65 ERA (3 ER/41.1 IP) and converted on all eight of his save opportunities.

Those numbers also placed Freeman among the conference leaders as the Jonesborough, Tenn. native ranked second in slugging percentage, tied for second in home runs, ranked third in RBI, tied for third in triples, tied for fourth in doubles, tied for sixth in hits, and ranked ninth in batting average. Meanwhile, Freeman’s eight saves were the second-most by an A-Sun closer, while he tied for league lead in games finished at 21.

"This is a tremendous honor for Clinton,” said head coach Tony Skole. “He had a heckuva junior season and we are very fortunate to have him back for his senior year. Clint is one of the most dedicated and hardest workers I have ever coached, so it is very gratifying to see him receive this recognition."

Freeman was one of 57 student-athletes to receive the honor, while the A-Sun had three players named to the list. Freeman was joined by Mercer’s Nick Backlund and Chesny Young. In all, there are players from 17 conferences and 35 schools nationwide on the preseason list.
