JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 2, 2014) – The Canisius baseball team enjoyed its first-ever visit to Thomas Stadium this weekend.

The Golden Griffins completed the three-game sweep over ETSU as Canisius belted four home runs on Sunday and cruised to a lopsided, 13-6 victory over the Buccaneers.

Canisius – who outscored the Blue and Gold 24-8 in the series – outhit ETSU 19-6 on Sunday, while 12 of those hits went for extra bases. Overall, the nine starters recorded a hit for the Golden Griffins as Brett Siddall and Jose Torralba paced Canisius with three-hit efforts. Siddall went 3 for 4 with one triple, one home run, and three RBI, and Torralba finished 3 for 5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Joining Siddall with home runs were Jimmy Luppens, Shane Zimmer, and Christ Conley.

Junior right-hander Devon Stewart took a perfect game into the sixth inning and earned the win (2-1) after holding the Bucs to one run on two hits in six innings of work, while sophomore lefty Josh Jacques (Rollinsford, N.H.) suffered the loss (1-1) for ETSU. Jacques was charged with three runs on three hits in two innings.

Like they did all weekend, the Griffs – who outscored the Bucs 13-0 in the first three innings of the series – jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after three innings of play.

In the second, Connor Panas and Torralba registered consecutive one-out doubles to left, while Zimmer made it a 3-0 game when he blasted a two-run homer to center for his first round tripper of the year.

The long ball came into play again in the third and fourth innings as Canisius extended its lead to 6-0. Luppens, who was 6 for 12 with two doubles, two home runs and six RBI in the series, connected on a two-out, two-run home run to left-center in the third, while Conley led off the fourth with an opposite field homer to left.

The Griffs pushed two more runs across in the top of the sixth, before ETSU finally broke up Stewart’s perfect game bid in the bottom half of the inning. Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.) became the Bucs’ first base runner to reach as he recorded a one-out double to right and later scored on a sac-fly RBI by Clinton Freeman (Jonesborough, Tenn.), making it an 8-1 ballgame.

Unfortunately, Canisius wasn’t done with its offensive output as Siddall’s three-run blast in the seventh fueled a five-run inning en route to pushing the Griffs’ lead to, 13-1.

ETSU had a five-run inning of its own in the bottom of the ninth to pull within seven, but Canisius went back to Buffalo, N.Y., on a three-game winning streak. Chris Riopedre (Miami, Fla.), Jordan Sanford (Powell, Tenn.), Brandon Wilson (Sevierville, Tenn.), and York all had RBIs for the Blue and Gold in the ninth.

Freshman outfielder Brandon Moss (Atlanta, Ga.) posted his first collegiate hit with a leadoff single in the seventh and also scored a run in the ninth.

The Bucs continue their eight-game homestand Wednesday evening when ETSU hosts Eastern Kentucky at 6:05 p.m.
