Chesney, Nesselt named to A-Sun All-Academic Team
Monday, May 19, 2014
FT. MYERS, Fla. (May 19, 2014) – Senior Will Chesney (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) not only put up impressive numbers on the mound this season for the ETSU baseball team, but they also excelled in the classroom as the Buccaneer duo were named to the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team on Monday.
For the second straight year Chesney was selected to the all-academic team as the Sport Management major graduated with Cum Laude honors (3.67 GPA). Chesney, a four-time Dean’s List and A-Sun All-Academic member, went 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA in 31 appearances this season for the Blue and Gold. The Buccaneer right-hander ranked 19th nationally in appearances and tied for ninth in the A-Sun in games finished (13). Ten of Chesney’s 31 appearances came in conference play – where he went 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA. Overall, Chesney didn’t allow an earned run in 23 of his 31 appearances, while he also received his first-ever A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honor on Feb. 24 after tossing 7.1 scoreless innings in four appearances.
Nesselt, who is majoring in both Accounting and Finance, has compiled a 3.51 cumulative GPA. The Buccaneer right-hander is a two-time Dean’s List and A-Sun All-Academic member. On the mound, Nesselt went 7-5 with a 4.07 ERA in 18 appearances (15 starts) this season for the Blue and Gold. The Plantation, Fla. native ranked third in the A-Sun in innings (95.0), tied for fourth in wins (7) and was eighth in strikeouts (59). Nesselt posted nine quality starts, while the Bucs went 10-5 in his starts. The ETSU starting pitcher ranked fifth nationally in starts (15), while he won four starts in conference action. Nesselt struck out a career-high eight batters twice this season – against Stetson (3/22) and USC Upstate (5/2) – while tossing his first collegiate complete game in a 7-2 win over Mercer last Thursday.
Mercer’s Derrick Workman was named the A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year after garnering a 4.0 GPA as a Communications major.
The A-Sun All-Academic Team was made up of 13 players, while ETSU was one of three teams to have two or more players on the list.
The A-Sun introduced the new sport-by-sport Academic All-Conference teams in the 2011-12 academic year to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better and participated in at least half of their team’s games.
