SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 16, 2015) – Following his three home run performance in the shortened series sweep over Eastern Kentucky this past weekend, ETSU junior second baseman Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.) received Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and Southern Conference Player of the Week honors, which was released on Monday.
York helped guide the Buccaneers to a pair of wins to open the 2015 season as the Knoxville native hit .714 (5-7) with three home runs, five runs and six RBI, while registering an astonishing slugging percentage of 2.000.
“This is a great honor for Trey,” said head coach Tony Skole. “It was exciting to watch him perform at such a high level this weekend. Trey worked extremely hard this fall and preseason to become a more complete player. He has always had tremendous natural ability, but to see him put it together this weekend was fun to watch.”
The ETSU infielder went 2 for 3 with a home run, two runs and two RBI in Friday’s 7-3 Opening Day win over the Colonels, while following that up with a two home run game in Saturday’s 12-2 victory. York tied a career high with three hits and his four RBI marked a new career best in Saturday’s 10-run win.
York entered the season with one home run in 238 career at-bats prior to his three home run outburst over the weekend. Ironically, York’s four career home runs have all come against Eastern Kentucky.
The Bucs return to action this weekend as ETSU heads to Spartanburg, S.C. for the Upstate Classic. ETSU faces tournament host USC Upstate Friday at 4 p.m.
