SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 16, 2015) – ETSU junior first baseman Kevin Phillips (St. Louis, Mo.) helped guide the Buccaneers to three wins in four games last week and was named Southern Conference Player of the Week, announced the league office on Monday.
Phillips, who hit .400 (6-15) with three doubles, two home runs, three runs and 10 RBI in four games, was the catalyst in ETSU’s weekend sweep over Miami at Thomas Stadium. The Buccaneer first baseman reached base safely in all four games last week, extending his streak to 11 straight games.
The St. Louis, Mo., native recorded home runs in back-to-back games against the RedHawks, while driving in 10 of ETSU’s 24 runs for the series. Phillips began the weekend going 2 for 3 with one double, one home run and tied a season high with four RBI in the Bucs’ 7-5 series-opening win on Friday. On Saturday, Phillips’ three-run home run with two outs in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winning hit as it snapped a tie game and ETSU held on for a 6-5 victory. Phillips capped off the series finale with a bang as he went 3 for 5 with two doubles, one run and three RBI.
After registering three doubles and two home runs for the week, Phillips is now ETSU’s leader in doubles (9) and is tied for the team lead in home runs (5).
The Bucs embark on a six-game game road swing beginning Tuesday afternoon at Morehead State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
