Bucs-Bulldogs to play doubleheader Saturday at 1:05 p.m.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 17, 2015) – Samford plated nine second-inning runs and got eight solid innings from starter Alex Ledford as the Bulldogs defeated ETSU, 15-4, in the series opener on Friday night at Thomas Stadium.

The Bulldogs put the game away early as they sent 13 hitters to the plate in the second inning, while the first six Samford (19-17, 7-3 SoCon) batters reached base in a frame that saw the visitors from Birmingham score nine runs on 10 hits.

ETSU (14-22, 3-7 SoCon) plated its runs in the third on Aaron Maher’s (Brentwood, Tenn.) two-run home run off the foul pole in left, while the freshman outfielder drove in his third run of the night with an RBI single in a two-run sixth. Danny Carrier (Cincinnati, Ohio) registered the other RBI in the frame when his opposite field single scored Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.) – who reached on one of his two singles on the night.

Overall, Samford – who has outscored its opponents, 69-17, over its five-game win streak – out-hit the Blue and Gold, 19-8, while all nine starters finished with at least one base knock.

The Bucs were led by York and Maher as they both totaled two hits each to extend their respectable streaks. York has reached base safely in 14 straight games, while Maher – who belted his second home run of the year and drove in a career-high three runs – has hit in nine consecutive games. Senior Zach Thompson (Johnson City, Tenn.) extended his hit streak to eight straight games with a leadoff single in the fourth and also walked twice, and Jeremy Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) moved his mark of reaching safely to 11 games following a nine-inning single to right.

Ledford (5-3) earned the win after allowing four runs on seven hits in eight innings, while Cole Limbaugh retired three of the four hitters he faced in the ninth.

Junior Lee Haeberle (Hendersonville, Tenn.) suffered the loss (3-6) after being tagged for eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in 1.1 innings. Red-shirt sophomore Peyton Taylor (Kingsport, Tenn.) was solid in extended relief as he went five innings of allowing two runs on four hits.

Alex Lee led Samford’s offensive surge as he finished with four hits and scored three runs, while Austin Edens and Richard Greene homered in the win. Edends jump-started the nine-run second inning with a leadoff homer and Greene ripped his two-run shot to left-center in a two-run sixth. The Bulldogs also scored one run in the third, added two more in the fourth and pushed across their final run in the ninth.

Due to rain expected to hit the area on Sunday, ETSU and Samford will play a doubleheader on Saturday to finish off the SoCon series. First pitch of the twin bill is slated for 1:05 p.m. at Thomas Stadium.
