CHARLESTON, S.C. (May 18, 2015) – Senior Jimmy Nesselt (Plantation, Fla.) and freshman Hagen Owenby (Knoxville, Tenn.) swept the Southern Conference weekly awards as the league office released the honors on Monday. Nesselt was named Pitcher of the Week and Owenby was named Player of the Week.
The Buccaneer duo helped ETSU end the regular season on a positive note as the Blue and Gold won the weekend series over Wofford at Thomas Stadium.
Nesselt got senior weekend started off on the right foot as he allowed one unearned run on four hits, while striking out nine and walking two in five innings to earn the win on Friday night against the Terriers. The Buccaneer hurler was removed after five innings due to a pitch count, but he struck out at least two batters in four of the five innings of work, including striking out the side in the fourth. Following his nine-strikeout performance, Nesselt became the first ETSU hurler to reach 100-plus strikeouts in a season since 2001 as the right-hander has 103 on the campaign. In addition, the Plantation, Fla., native is just one of 68 pitchers in SoCon history to reach the 100-strikeout club, while he and The Citadel’s James Reeves – another 100-plus strikeout member – will square off in Tuesday’s play-in game of the SoCon Championship.
Meanwhile, with Nesselt dealing on the mound, Owenby was swinging a hot bat as he was 7-for-15 (.467) with two doubles, two home runs, two walks, six runs scored and eight RBI in four games for the Buccaneers last week. The freshman catcher hit safely in all four contests for the Blue and Gold. Owenby began the week going 1-for-4 with a run scored in ETSU’s 5-4 setback at Appalachian State on Tuesday, but combined to hit .545 (6-11) with two doubles, two home runs, five runs and eight RBI in the series win over Wofford. Owenby’s two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning on Friday night helped guide ETSU to a 6-3 win in the opener. In Saturday’s doubleheader, Owenby went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs, two RBI and a home run in the 10-9 game one loss, but followed that up with three hits (two doubles), two runs and three RBI in the 12-5 series-clinching win in the nightcap. The Knoxville, Tenn. native tied a career high by driving in three runs in two games last week, while his pair of doubles in Saturday’s win also tied a career best as he accomplished the feat on February 22 versus Pittsburgh.
Owenby joins Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Kevin Philips (St. Louis, Mo.) as Player of the Week recipients this season, while Nesselt is the first Buccaneer hurler to capture Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Bucs begin play in the SoCon Championship on Tuesday morning when ETSU faces The Citadel in the play-in game. First pitch is set for 10 a.m., at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.
