JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 8, 2015) – The ETSU baseball team have finished game two of the ETSU Fall World Series, and the Gold team was able to tie the series at one win a piece as they beat the Blue team 5-1 at Thomas Stadium on Monday night. Both teams displayed some strong pitching as both teams only surrendered 13 hits in total.
The Bucs’ outstanding pitching did not surrender a run until the seventh inning. The first run of the game came from a two RBI double by Nathan Millsap (Kingsport, Tenn.). The Blue team limited the damage to two runs in the seventh inning after getting a strikeout and a fly out after the double.
Blake Smith (Ninety Six, S.C.) started the game for the Gold team and had two straight 1-2-3 innings. In those first two innings, he had three groundouts and three fly outs. Smith finished the game with three innings and just one hit. Counter to Smith was Victor Gonzalez (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) for the Blue team. Gonzalez went perfect in his first inning, as he was able to get two groundouts and a lineout. He had some difficulty in second inning as Hagen Owenby (Knoxville, Tenn.) connected with a double to left field followed by a Blake Rowlett (Clarkesville, Tenn.) infield single, but Gonzalez was able to strikeout two batters and get a batter to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.
The best at-bat of the game came in the eighth inning when Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.) of the Gold team crushed a three run homer off the batter’s eye in center field. This extended the lead to 5-0 at that point and sealed the victory for the Gold team.
There were several other pitchers for both teams that had some impressive outings:
