JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 9, 2016) – Hagen Owenby (Knoxville, Tenn.) was listed on the Johnny Bench watch list for being a top division one catcher in college baseball.
The first watch list named 74 catchers across the nation to watch for in their 2016 season. Owenby has been placed on the list due to his success on the field this year and during his freshman campaign.
This year Owenby leads all starters in batting average (.438), home runs (7), and slugging percentage (.938). In his last eight games, he has connected with all seven home runs. He has started all 12 games this season for the Blue and Gold, and he has totaled 21 hits which is tied for most on the team and has scored 11 times for second best on the team.
Last year Owenby started in 47 games for the Bucs and toted a .310 batting average with 38 RBIs and 18 extra base knocks.
The watch list will be updated until May 3, and the board will announce the three finalists on June 6. The national committee will vote on who they believe is the best catcher, and the winner will be announced at the Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 30.
