GREENVILLE, S.C. (May 25, 2016) – The ETSU baseball team will see a familiar foe in its elimination game of the Southern Conference Tournament on Thursday morning. The Bucs will take on The Citadel at 9 a.m. at Fluor Field in Greenville S.C.
ETSU (26-29) just swept the Bulldogs this past weekend in Johnson City. The sweep marked the first time the Bucs took all three from the Bulldogs since 2004. The Citadel leads the all-time series, 55-31.
This past weekend, ETSU outscored The Citadel, 31-17, while the Bucs hit .324 (33-for-102) with five doubles and five home runs. Senior outfielder Jeremy Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) was 8-for-12 (.667) with one double, six runs scored, two RBI and three stolen bases in the series, and sophomore catcher Hagen Owenby (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit .462 (6-for-13) with one double, one home run, four runs and six RBI. Senior catcher Andrew Lasure (Stanford, Ky.) also went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one home run, two runs scored and five RBI in two games last weekend. On the mound, junior right-hander Blake Smith (Ninety Six, S.C.) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts in Thursday’s 11-2 win, while sophomore righty Dillon Cate (Sevierville, Tenn.) retired all four hitters he faced in Saturday’s 10-6 victory. Junior southpaw Jamin McCann (Kingsport, Tenn.) made two appearances over the weekend and earned the win in Friday’s 10-9 comeback win.
The Citadel (17-41) defeated VMI, 3-2, on Bret Hines’ 10th-inning walk-off triple on Tuesday, while the Bulldogs fell to top-seeded Mercer, 13-1, on Wednesday.
McCann (7-4) will get the start for ETSU, while The Citadel counters with freshman righty Thomas Byelick.
The winner of Thursday’s game will move on and play in another elimination game on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., while the losing team’s season will come to an end.
