Buccaneer duo placed on South All-Region First Team

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 16, 2016) – The postseason accolades keep piling up for ETSU’s Hagen Owenby (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.)

The pair of first team All-Southern Conference selections – who were also drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft last week – were named to the ABCA/Rawlings South All-Region First Team on Wednesday night. Owenby was selected as a catcher and York was placed as second baseman.

Thirteen players made up the first team with seven of those players being drafted in the top-3 rounds of the 2016 MLB Draft – including four being taken in the first round. ETSU was one of four schools to have multiple players earn first team honors as Florida (Logan Shore, Shaun Anderson and Peter Alonso), Louisville (Corey Ray, Devin Hairston and Brendan McKay) and Mississippi State (Jake Mangum and Dakota Hudson) joined the group. Mercer’s Kyle Lewis, Tennessee’s Nick Senzel and North Florida’s Corbin Olmestead rounded out the first team list. Senzel was the second overall pick in the MLB Draft, while Ray went No. 5 to Milwaukee, Lewis was taken No. 11 by Seattle and Hudson was drafted 34th by St. Louis.

Owenby – who was drafted in the 14th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates – hit .374 (88-for-235) with 16 doubles, 17 home runs, 46 runs scored and 60 RBI in 57 games for the Bucs in 2016. The Louisville Slugger All-American paced the Blue and Gold in average, hits, home runs and slugging percentage (.660), while also 29 multi-hit and 16 multi-RBI games. To go with his other honors, Owenby was also named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on May 2 and earned SoCon Player of the Month honors in May.

York, a ninth round pick by the Brewers, was named first team Louisville Slugger All-American earlier this month. The Knoxville, Tenn. native hit .348 (81-for-233) with 23 doubles, one triple, 15 homers, 60 runs scored and 62 RBI, while starting all 57 games for the Bucs. The Buccaneer infielder also stole 17 bases and led the team with a .431 on-base percentage.

The teams consist of eight regions with the teams being voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association. ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first-team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. ABCA/Rawlings All-Americans will be announced on Saturday, June 18 and the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team will be announced on Sunday, June 19.
