About the Bucs
ETSU opens Southern Conference play with an 11-6 record and winners of four in the last six games.
In the Bucs last series at Miami University, ETSU won the series as the Bucs swept the double header on Sunday in Oxford, Ohio. Strong pitching led the Bucs to their fifth series win this year as they had strong outings from Simpler, Korzybski and Smith.
Smith was named the SoCon pitcher of the week where he mowed down 14 batters in the rubber series with the Redhawks. He tossed a complete, two-hit game, which is the first time for an ETSU pitcher since Kerry Doane delivered a 1-0 victory at No. 21 Mercer in 2013. The Bucs clubbed 14 runs in the series finale to clinch the series win for the Blue and Gold.
In the last six games, the Buccaneer offense has seven players hitting over .300. Leading the surge is junior Christian Bailey (Kingsport, Tenn.) who has connected at a .423 mark in the last six games. In that stretch, he leads the team with 11 hits including a pair of extra-base hits. Right behind him is the designated hitter Caleb Longley (Cleveland, Tenn.) who has connected at a .409 clip. He has hit a pair of home runs and is tied for the most RBIs on the team (7) in the previous six games. Hagen Owenby (Knoxville, Tenn.) has recorded nine hits including a home run, five runs scored and six RBIs. Aaron Maher (Brentwood, Tenn.), Cullen Smith (Lebanon, Tenn.) and Seth Cunningham (Bristol, Va.) have combined for 16 hits, five extra-base hits and 14 RBIs in the last six games.
On the year, junior college transfer Hunter Parker (Chattanooga, Tenn.) still leads the team in batting average (.419), and he has started in all 18 games in the outfield for the Bucs. He leads the team in on-base percentage at .507 and has recorded 26 hits while scoring 14 times. Chris Cook (Kingsport, Tenn.) has connected with a .338 batting average and has smacked 26 hits while leading the Buccaneer squad with 24 runs scored.
The pitching staff has been off to a hot start this year as the team has a combined 4.60 ERA while striking out 153 batters. The staff has also limited opponents to a .269 batting average in 164.1 innings pitched.
Mercer is currently on a six game win streak and comes into its SoCon opener with a 19-4 overall record.
The Bears hosted a two game, mid-week series with Florida A&M this week, and Mercer swept both games 9-2 and 11-5. Last weekend, Mercer traveled to ranked East Carolina where they swept the Pirates. The three-game sweep of ECU gave the Bears national attention as they started receiving votes in two polls – NCBWA and ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll.
The upperclassmen lead the Mercer squad as they have 21 upperclassmen on the roster.
Senior Danny Edgeworth leads Mercer with a .413 batting average including the second-most doubles on the team. Senior catcher Charlie Madden is behind Edgeworth with a .361 batting average, and he leads the team with nine home runs and 11 doubles, and he is also second on the squad with 28 RBIs. Junior JT Thomas has started in 22 of the 23 games for the Bears, and he is second on the team with a .370 batting average, and he leads the team with 29 RBIs and is second with a .741 slugging percentage and 30 hits.
As a team, the Bears have out-hit opponents 255 to 224 and outslugged opposing teams .530 to .386. Mercer has also out-scored opponents 207 to 123 while knocking 30 more doubles and 17 more home runs than opposing teams.
The Mercer pitching staff has been strong this year as they tote a 4.46 team ERA including tossing two shutouts this year. In 23 total games, the Bears have struck out 209 batters and walked 70 opponents in 208 innings pitched.
