JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 11, 2017) – In the final Southern Conference home series of the season for the Bucs, the ETSU baseball team hosts Samford in a three-game set beginning Friday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Thomas Stadium.

Probable Starters

Friday: RHP Ryan Simpler (6-3, 3,76 ERA) vs. RHP Cody Shelton (4-2, 2.01 ERA)

Saturday: RHP Griffin Krieg (1-5, 5.74 ERA) vs. RHP Mikhail Cazenave (3-7, 4.99 ERA)

Sunday: RHP Blake Smith (3-6, 5.08 ERA) vs. RHP Stephen Jones (3-3, 5.05 ERA)

Last time against Samford

The last time these two ball clubs squared off was last year in Homewood, Ala. The Bucs traveled to Joe Lee Griffin Field, and ETSU came away with a big three-game sweep of the Bulldogs as ETSU out-scored (34-21) and out-hit (38-28) Samford.  Blake Rowlett (Clarksville, Tenn.) raced past the Bulldogs as he smacked six hits including a double and a home run while totaling six RBIs in the series. Aaron Maher (Brentwood, Tenn.) connected with four hits including a home run while Christian Bailey (Kingsport, Tenn.) touched home three times off four hits.

Jamin McCann (Kingsport, Tenn.) stifled the Bulldogs’ bats as he appeared in two games with one start. He totaled 8.1 innings that weekend where he went a perfect 2-0 along with a 1.08 ERA, and he struck out eight batters and scattered six hits. Peyton Taylor (Kingsport, Tenn.) tossed in two games where he totaled three innings while striking out a trio of Bulldogs

About the Bucs

ETSU enters the final SoCon home series of the season with a two-game winning streak and a 22-25 overall record and a 4-14 league mark. The Bucs are also an impressive 17-11 inside Thomas Stadium.

 In ETSU’s two-game winning streak, Hagen Owenby (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Jammer Strickland (Knoxville, Tenn.) have been on a tear as each have knocked four hits including one home run each. Strickland leads the Buccaneer squad with three extra base hits in the win streak. Cullen Smith (Lebanon, Tenn.), Maher and Rowlett have also contributed a home run each as the team has out-homered The Citadel and Radford 5-1 in the last two games.

Four Buccaneer pitchers have posted scoreless outings in the previous two games – Connor Bartow (Jonesborough, Tenn.), Russell Koesters (Kingsport, Tenn.), Daniel Sweeney (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Drew Korzybski (Knoxville, Tenn.). Bartow appeared in both games including making his first collegiate start on Tuesday against Radford. In the two-game stretch, he twirled 2.2 innings without allowing a hit and striking out one. Koesters, Sweeney and Korzybski combined for 3.2 innings of work while allowing only one hit and one walk.

Scouting the Bulldogs

The Bulldogs enter the weekend series with a 27-21 overall record and an 8-10 SoCon record. The three games in Johnson City will be their final road series of the regular season.

In its previous series against Furman, Samford was nearly swept at home as it dropped the first two games, but the Bulldogs salvaged the series finale 4-3 as they scored all four runs in the fourth inning.

Taylor Garris leads the Samford offense with a .363 batting average as he has played in 47 of the 48 games including 44 starts. He has connected with 53 hits including six doubles and four home runs. T.J. Dixon is right behind his teammate as he hits at a .326 mark with a team-leading 63 hits. He has connected with nine doubles and three triples. Branden Fryman has the second-most hits on the team with 58 as he has dropped seven extra-base hits this season. Kevin Williams Jr. has the most power on the team as he has 22 extra-base hits (11 doubles and 11 home runs).

ETSU will face Samford’s stud starting pitcher on Friday in Cody Shelton. He has started eight games and holds a 2.01 ERA in 49.1 innings pitched. He has struck out 50 batters and walked 16 opponents. On Saturday, the Bulldogs will toss Mikhail Cazenav who is 3-7 on the year, but he has the most starts (12), innings pitched (70.1) and strikeouts (65) on the team. Wyatt Burns is the shutdown closer for Samford as he has 12 saves along with a 4-0 record in 23 appearances. He has struck out 33 batters and walked six in 39.2 innings of work this season.
