No. 7 ETSU to face No. 2 Western Carolina at 4 p.m. in Greenville, S.C.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (May 21, 2017) – After winning seven of the last nine games including six Southern Conference games to conclude the regular season, the ETSU baseball team was awarded the 7th seed in the SoCon Tournament presented by Holston Gases, which will take place May 23-28 at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.

After sweeping VMI this past weekend, ETSU was able to jump into seventh place by finishing the regular season 27-27 overall and 9-15 in the SoCon. ETSU will face 2nd seed Western Carolina, who finished 28-26 overall and 15-8 in the league. The Catamounts are the reigning Southern Conference Tournament champions as they posted a 5-1 record in the tournament last year including defeating the regular season champions Mercer, twice, in the championship games.

The Bucs and Catamounts will square off in the first round of the double elimination tournament on Wednesday, May 24 at 4 p.m. at Fluor Field.

With that seeding, ETSU avoided the play-in game and will participate in the double elimination format tournament beginning on May 24. The Citadel and VMI will square off in the play-in game, which takes place May 23 at 10 a.m. Mercer claimed its third straight No. 1 seed after the Bears finished the season going 38-15 and 17-6 in the SoCon, and they await the winner of the play-in game.

In the regular season this year, Western Carolina swept ETSU in Johnson City, but the Bucs nearly won game one of the series as they took the Catamounts into 12 innings. Christian Bailey (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Hagen Owenby (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the Blue and Gold as the duo combined for 11 hits including four extra-base hits and six runs scored in the three-game series.

ETSU and Western Carolina have met seven times in the Southern Conference Tournament. Western Carolina holds a 5-2 advantage on ETSU, and the most recent matchup between these two teams in the SoCon Tournament was in 1999 where the Catamounts won 7-5 in Charleston, S.C.

The SoCon Championship will be video streamed on the SoCon Digital Network on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while the championship game(s) will be broadcast on ESPN3.
