JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 26, 2018) – For the 18th year in a row, ETSU student-athletes came together to bring the spirit of the holidays to local children, taking the annual “A Buccaneer Christmas” event to an off-campus site for the first time.
With the Johnson City Coalition for Kids acting as the host Monday evening, a turnout of approximately 65 children were greeted by over 70 ETSU student-athletes representing the baseball, football and cheerleading teams. In addition, the ETSU Marching Bucs’ drumline was on hand to give a special welcome to Santa Claus himself.
ETSU Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Game Operations Lee Morrow, who has coordinated “A Buccaneer Christmas” every year since it began in 1999, said this was another great event.
“There are so many people to thank for making this happen,” Morrow said. “The ETSU athletic trainers who wrapped the gifts, Mr. Clarence Mabe for providing the gifts, our ETSU band, our student-athletes, and Cindy Young from Coalition from Kids. I am never disappointed in our athletes at this event. They make us all proud to be associated with ETSU athletics.”
Athletes helped facilitate the event, as children enjoyed mingling with the Buccaneers with stations set up to participate in special games. The children also opened gifts and spent time with Santa Claus.
The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics takes pride in its community service activities and strives for 100 percent participation from its student-athletes, coaches and administrators throughout the year.
