Johnson City, Tenn. (July 8, 2002) - East Tennessee State's football team officially completed its preseason camp with its annual Blue-Gold scrimmage this afternoon in Memorial Center. Playing the first half of the scrimmage under game conditions, junior tailback Gavin Varner (Summerville, S.C.) emerged as one of the top players for the offense, gaining over 100 yards and scoring a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback was the main topic of the day, with senior Jatavis Sanders (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and sophomores Dashannon Gamble (Ladson, S.C.) and Jason Davis (Sevierville, Tenn.) all seeing playing time with the starting offense.
"Our quarterbacks are going to have to learn as the season progresses," said head coach Paul Hamilton. "We are going to have to mature every day in practice and every week and hopefully get better and better at that position. The key right now is to use the strengths and what they do best of whoever might be playing for us.
"Today we tried to get Dashannon and Jason in there in game-type situations. Jatavis is further ahead in terms of running our two-minute and hurry offenses and that is why we worked him in that phase of our offense today. I wanted to get a look at all of them today and I'm going to study this tape and see what direction we want to go in. I positive about where we are at with our quarterbacks, but I also know it is going to be a learning process."
